Video | JB Straubel and Tesla Motors on Energy Storage
J.B. Straubel, Chief Technology Officer at Tesla Motors provides says,"We all should be thinking bigger." Straubel gave those remarks during his keynote address this week at the 2014 Silicon Valley Energy Storage Symposium.
Around the 16:00 minute marke, Straubel touches on the Gigafactory and the 15 GwH/yr slated just for stationary pack production and a Tesla Motor's case study on its stationary pack at a Supercharger station in Tejon, Calif. Enjoy!
Interesting comments:
- We're looking at the material synthesis and where the raw materials come (Gigafactory). Materials are a resonable part of that process (building a battery). Even those material costs can be reduced if you drive the right volume via purchasing power.
- Gigafactory the overall target goal for cell production is 35 GWH/yr for 2020 and pack production of 50 GWH/yr per year
- 15 GWH/yr will be targeted for stationary energy, to build stationary battery packs. Straubel says, "We see the California mandate for stationary energy storage by 2020 and we're (Tesla) quite a lot more bullish than that. We think that mandate will be met and far exceeded before the timeframe expires. We all should be thinking bigger."
