The City of Auburn Hills Tackles EV Infrastructure

I recently wrote an article on Auburn Hill's 2011 electric vehicle ordinance, called "EV Infrastructure | Inside The Belly of the Beast,” which appeared on Inside EVs and reveals how a forward-thinking leader in the Community Development department is hoping more partnerships with automakers will be coming. Below is an audio excerpt of that interview that did not make it into the articlce.

The interview is with Steve Cohen, Dir. of Community Development, City of Auburn Hills and Ron Melchert, Director of Public Works, City of Auburn Hills.

Back in 2011, the City of Auburn Hills (a suburb of Detroit) was the first municipality in Michigan to adopt a comprehensive Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Ordinance. The ordinance encourages, but does not require, developers, builders, homeowners and business owners to make Plug-in Electric Vehicle (PEV) charging stations a regular part of construction.

In this excerpt, below, Steve talks about his "aha" moment on why an electric vehicle charging ordinance should exist in Auburn Hills and the economics of it. Other topics include their involvement with the Department of Energy's Workplace Charging program
